Wide range of domain names soon

By 2013 we are going to have a wide range of domain names from .bank, .hotel to.lol, .docs. Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) recently closed the process for top-level domain programme in which it received requests for a variety of domain names.

Google has applied for its own top-level domains like .google and .youtube to expand the scope of web domains. It has also applied for other content specific domain names, like .lol and .docs.  From India requests were received for domain names ending with .tata, .reliance, .bharti, .SBI,  .Mahindra.

While this sounds exciting, experts believe this move will burden small business. Whether domain names are required or not companies will have to spend money to project their online identities and hence they would end up registering new domains. The fee would be some $185,000 to ICANN to start with, an annual $25,000–and more in lawyers’ fees.

ICANN has received 2,000 applications from the world, 28 applications from 15 Indian corporate houses.   The new internet addresses will be revealed on June 13. Evaluation of these names will begin by July 12 only. The evaluation process is expected to go on for six to seven months.

There are 22 top level domain names in Internet today, including .com, .org, .net, .info,  .org, .xxx, .jobs, .aero, and .asia and over 200 country-based domain names like .in, .us, .uk.
